Help-A-Neighbor

Everyone knows someone in our neighborhood who, because of age, health, or other challenges, needs some extra help keeping his/her home in tip-top shape. We’re going to help one (and perhaps even two) families in our neighborhood with basic but important upkeep activities (painting, landscaping, moving items around).

If you’d like to nominate someone (or self-nominate) to get this help, if you’d like to volunteer, or if you’d like to contribute paint, painting supplies or landscaping, please contact our VP of Neighborhood Improvements, Ramon Castella, at 305-445-2900 or rcastella@c3ts.com.

Halloween

Our neighborhood’s Halloween event just keeps getting more and more popular. This year Halloween lands on a Saturday, so we expect more families than ever. The Halloween Havens will be open from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Fall Neighborhood Meeting

Miami Children’s Hospital Auditorium This is one of our two large meetings of the year. We expect our County Commissioner, Rebeca Sosa, as well as representatives of the Parks, Public Works, and Police Departments to speak to our neighborhood about upcoming projects and current issues. It will give us all a chance to find out how the tough budget year ahead will impact our neighborhood.

Schenley Park Neighborhood Canned Food Drive

Though the current economic climate has affected all of us in some way, we’re still a very fortunate community. There are thousands in Miami-Dade who are not as lucky. To that end, we’re starting up the first ever Schenley Park Neighborhood Canned Food Drive. We’re asking every family to contribute at least 20 cans of soup, veggies or fruit…or as few or as many as they can. Our goal is to collect at least 500 cans by having collection homes on almost every block; the canned food will then be donated to the Community Partnership for the Homeless, which provides meals to hundreds of individuals each day, in time for Thanksgiving (Nov 26th). Participating homes will serve as collection points, where neighbors can drop off bags of canned food (at your doorstep or other accessible spot) at their convenience. A dozen homes throughout our neighborhood have already signed up to serve as collection points, but certainly more are needed.

Family Safety Day

Miami Children’s Hospital – Batchelor Academic and Research Pavilion

NSP is cohosting, with Miami Children’s Hospital, the First Annual Family Safety Event, at the hospital’s Batchelor Academic and Research Pavilion area. There will be bike helmet giveaways, child passenger safety seat checks, registration for babysitting and child CPR courses, helicopter and ambulance tours, games, free food and refreshments. It should be lots of fun and very helpful.

3. Items Discussed:

· Approved Meeting Minutes (Calendar) from our July Board Meeting.

· Voted in 4 new members.

· Approved Bylaw Revision of Election Section.

· Will be moving the election to March (around the Spring General Meeting) and offices commence on July 1st. Cristina Blanco to revise bylaws accordingly.

· Approved Elections Process (though now will need to revamp the process to the new timeline).

· Announced Commissioner Sosa’s Town Hall Meeting on August 18th at 6:00pm at the MCH Auditorium (meeting is for her whole district).

· Approved Calendar for 2009 and 2010 (attached to these meeting minutes).

· Help-A-Neighbor Event moved to November 14th. Need to be sure to address all liability issues.

· Absolute final article submission deadline for the summer newsletter is this Saturday, August 15th.

· Voted on Gem in Schenley Park Award.

· Cristina Blanco voted and approved as this year’s Elections Chair.

· Membership Drive to take place in September. Memberships for 2010 are from January 1st – December 31st.

· Send a specialized mailing to current members thanking them for their membership in 2009, a recap of 2009 and encouraging them to become a member in 2010 (include application).

· Membership applications to be distributed by foot with Halloween flyers to all of the area.

· Membership application to be included in the summer newsletter.
